A True Life Story of a Business
Transformation
Hi, my name is Dan Cricks and I've been in the repair shop business for since
1972 and as an owner since 1988. I started out probably like many of you in the
service station business, this was the first repair business I owned. In the
beginning I made money without doing any advertising or marketing. Then I bought
a second service station and thought I was on my way to great riches. WRONG! It
wasn't long after I bought the second station, when things started to change
with the oil company and profit margins began to dwindle. Fortunately I saw the
writing on the wall; I was able to sell the service stations and found a repair
shop that was closed that I could buy and went to building that business. After
a couple of years I had a great looking shop, customers that loved us and what I
thought was a decent crew.
But... I was struggling
Sounds like a bed of Rose's, right? Well, I started to realize that as good
as I thought the shop was doing, I was always struggling to pay the bills every
month. Some times I would have to juggle who I was going to pay and who would
have to wait until next month. I was getting tired of this, not to mention that
I was working my ass off working in the shop. Many days 11-12 hours, only about
8 hours on Saturday. Having a great shop and doing a great job wasn't enough! It
took a little while for this to bother me, after all when I had the service
station I usually worked 7 days. So 6 days was like a vacation in the beginning.
I probably would have been okay with the work if it weren't for not having
enough money to pay the bills most of the time. If we had a good week I could
get caught up and did that ever feel great!
Either Something changes or I'm getting
out
It was around that time that I decided that something had to change or I was
going to get out of this business. This was around July of 2001. I had made a
decision to go to a seminar to start learning more about how to do a better job
of running my shop and about how to do a better job with my advertising. Then
when 911 happened I thought you know "I can't take time away from my business
and go to this seminar”, it was like a ghost town around our shop because of
911. At that point I decided I wasn't going to the seminar which was scheduled
for October 2001. Fortunately it was only a few minutes after that thought, that
I walked through my 6 bay shop to find 4 of them empty. I then had another
thought, which I remember very clearly. I said to myself "you dummy, now is when
you really need to go to this seminar” and I did! This was one of the best
decisions I have ever made in my life!
We did A Good Job But... Not
Good Enough To Make Good Money
I soon found out that yes we did have a decent
shop, but we had a lot of things we could do better. We especially needed to do
a better job of getting the word out, so that more people would know what a
great job we did. The things that I learned helped me to start growing my
business immediately and at the same time improving my profit margins. It was so
good that even my accountant took notice. Here is just part of a note that he
sent me at the time.
"When Dan started with me, he owned two gas stations and struggled just to
breakeven. Today he is experiencing explosive growth at just one location. I am
quite familiar with several auto repair shops in the Cleveland and believe he is
the only one with these superior operating techniques. He is making more money
and working less hours, unheard of! I mentioned to him that I thought he
stumbled on a magic elixir and he just looked at me and smiled."

Now I was Not Only Working
Hard I Was Also Working Smart!
Because of what I learned the last 3 months of 2001 were so fantastic we had
an increase of 21%. In 2002 we grew our business by another 23%. In 2003 while
going from being open 6 days to being open 5 days a week, we again increased our
business by another 20% in 2004. By the middle of 2002 I had opened 2 savings
accounts and was able to pay all of my bills each week. By the end of 2002 not
only was I paying all of my bills on time, I had over $10,000.00 in one savings
account and several thousand dollars in the other account. I had such great
success that the person that was teaching me suggested that I had a lot of great
information and experience that I should share with other shop owners around the
country. In late October 2003 I began doing just that and have helped many shop
owners grow their business and their profit margins. Because of this success I
was again encouraged to expand what I was sharing with more shop owners and
began to do that in January of 2004. I have shared this information and
experience with shop owners all over the country and Canada. Why am I telling
you all of this because now I am teaching shop owners just like you how I and
other shop owners were able to achieve these kinds of results.
